The Fundamentals of Fan Tan
The term "Fan Tan" was something I'd never heard of before. I searched for "Fan Tan" on Google. It returned a few results. Some sites showed photos of the real thing but there was no information. It was strange that so little information was available. I decided to look deeper into the roots of the term to know more.
According to the etymology dictionary the meaning of the word is "a streak of dark brown." This indicates that the term is derived from a game of gambling which was played for a long time by the Egyptians. If you go back in the past, you'll find that the Egyptians utilized the similar Fan Tan formula that we do to play this game. It is likely that you know that black and brown are lucky colors for people who play the game. Infractions to this or disregarding this rule could cost you the game.
The majority of the early documents I could find that referenced the origins of the term "fan -tan" were from the earliest Chinese books and newspaper. Although I'm not certain that they refer to the Taninese version or the original Chinese Fan Tan of the word, it gives me some clues as to the source of the term. This is significant because many people will associate the origin of the name with gambling or Chinese games of some kind.
The first writings to mention the origin of the term "fan Tan-Tan" are from the Northern regions of China. In this region, you'll see the majority of games for gambling that have an ancient Chinese theme. Roulette games in general like the ones above are played in the Northern Chinese style. This means that you'll find a lot of people betting on these games in the Chinese Chinatown.
The Northern regions of China are where the origins of "Fan Tan-tan", the name for the phrase, actually lies. Locals would gamble on high-stakes games. This would usually mean that the game was either an online gambling game or a similar games. These bets were placed to win money if succeeded.
The problem with the Northern Chinese style of gambling is that the amount of money that was paid out was not that substantial.
